Public Exhibits - 19 September 2009

August 24, 2009 by kang

Thank you for making the Public Exhibit a great success

On a breezy Saturday afternoon, to have friends going around making new friends, chatting about common interests and gaining new interests, I really can't ask for a better, friendlier event.  Every direction I look, I can see people exchanging contact information, peering into the ideas put on display, even children enjoying themselves with games that are more free than those with adverts hidding behind a free download.

Thank you for exhibiting on Saturday, and helping to make the whole event such a lively one.  For the visitors who came, we all thank you too, and really hope you have found an alternative to all those closed software that you are used to.

What (Help to spread the word, mass email this flyer around!)

Join us on September 19th 2009 at Level1 Main Plaza at the National Library Building, Victoria Street. The Free & Open Source Alliance of Singapore (fosa.sg), in partnership with the National Library Board are proud to present a public exhibit for everyone. Everyone is welcome to visit it, for free. Lots of freebies from sponsors are up for grabs, and our alliances are going to share lots of knowledge about Software Freedom with you.

Who

The target audience is the man in the street, the parent, the good man who knows what is great software, and knows it must not cost him an arm and a leg. It is for the one who knows good value when he sees one. And if he wants to provide a great tool to his family, his friends, his colleagues, he wants to know that it is a tool that is openly designed, and there is no question about the source of the program. Everything is open. Open source.

How

The culmination of 2 days of software freedom is on during this public exhibit, where all the technical experts, sponsors, and our open source members, our greatest ambassadors will gather together and show anyone and everyone who is interested, what open source is all about. Come view our sponsors' and ambassadors' exhibits, take away using your thumbdrives, and get the free CDs, learn where are the websites to download the best open source tools. Chat with us about what you may want to do, but lacks the right tools, and see if we can point you in the right direction. Or simply chat with any of us, and see if our own experiences may be what you are going through as well, the frustrations of not getting good support, of not having a great community to help you during your worse hours. Just meet us, and become our friend, be a friend who enjoys Software Freedom.

This event is organised as part of the annual global Software Freedom Day initiative, already running since 2004 worldwide. In Singapore, this is the second year the event is being held. Please visit the Singapore website to check our other events to mark Software Freedom Day.

Art fans may also like to visit one of our resident artist member's display here.  This is how she describes it:

Eco-computing in Digital Media -- The Art of Lin Hsin Hsin
Deeply rooted in science and technology, Hsin Hsin, an award-winning artist, poet and composer.is a digital media pioneer since 1985. She created the 1st 3D digital art in 1987. She created the first virtual museum in the world in 1994. In this presentation, Hsin Hsin presents a selection of her wide ranging repertoire:

  • 2D digital art. The many categories of her 2D digital art are either FOSA-based and/or painted by a two-button mechanical mouse and a 16.7 million color palette on screen, whereby "Drag & Drop, Cut & Paste" are strictly forbidden.
  • 3D digital art. The many categories of her 3D art are either algorithm driven and/or strictly equation based whereby the creation of form, texture, lighting and animation are done simultaneously.  Beyond which, the file size for any of these 3D sculptures with average complexity can be as small as 150 KB. This equation-based method offers infinite scalability without constraints.

"The beauty of Linux empowers stability and optimal resource usage -- the true eco-computing in digital media"

T02If you want to try lots of different operating systems, like all the different LINUX distributions, and even the myriad list of Micro**** version, you will need a virtualization system. All running on one machine too!
And if you are thinking of multi boot, then this will excite you even more. There is no need to reboot to go into another system.
Consider further that you don't want any of the systems to fail. Then welcome to the realm of these experts, who will show you what is HA (High Availability) and RAID1 over the network.

T04Python has always been one of the great open source programming languages of our time. If programs looks like spaghetti to you, then you will find Python codes look like Mona Lisa. Python programs use indentation as a way to group logical statements together. Pick up this language as a beginner, and you will pick up the habit of writing beautiful code, right from day one.Python Meetup Group

T05Red Hat is still the leading operating system worldwide when it comes to the internet. If you surf the internet, you will very likely be looking at web sites based on Red Hat. It is so ubiquitous that if you click 10 links, you will probably land on 9 web sites floating on a Red Hat system.redhat

T09SMU OS3 (Open Source Software Society) has been key to executing Software Freedom Day these two years. We hope this group of excitable students will continue to hold sway within FOSA, and help to push open source to their own students. Their efforts in pushing open source has impressively reached even the general public through their alliance with FOSA since our days as the Singapore LINUX Meetup Group. Keep it up guys.SMU OS3

T10Do you know that SUSE is pronounced as SOO-SAA? I think it is German. And believe me, this is one distribution that packs a punch. With NOVELL's heavy weight behind it, this is one of the biggest contenders for anyone trying to have the best of both worlds. To get paid support when you need it, and to use it for free when you do not need it.NOVELL SUSE LINUX

T11PHP. Personal Home Page, that's the original aim of this now internet famous file extension. Look closely at the many web sites that you visit, and you will find that many of the URLs, web site file names end of “.PHP”. You will probably like to meet people from the registered society in Singapore who will exhibit their gems here. Come find out how easy it is to create your own interactive home pages with PHP.Philosophy in Programming

T12Have you heard of the geek who flew in a space shuttle - Mark Shuttleworth? No? Come ask Team Ubuntu, the Singapore counterpart of Mark's famous open source group. He is so rich that he will send you a CD wherever you are in the world (minus Antarctica, and some volcanoes). And mark this, he has a version called Edubuntu, yes, for education, that packs so many educational goodies that your kid probably can learn sufficiently well without going to school. Just kidding, go to school. School rocks.Team Ubuntu Singapore

T13Open SUSE is the completely free version offered by the good people at NOVELL. Yes, this is pretty much the same as what NOVELL sells for a living, and yet, they give it out for free. Hm...wondering how they survive? Come talk to Mike and his group of enthusiasts who happily embraces this operating system and will tell you how to make full use of it.Open Suse Meetup Group

T14Although a late comer to the open source scene among the tertiary institutions, this is one club that allows no one to enter without having a RHCP first (Red Hat Certified XYZ). Amazingly stringent entry requirement if you ask me. But with such high quality club members, you won't be surprised to hear that they have members to top national and international competitions. Like the SUN Microsystems' Open JIVE competition recently held. Come meet the future gurus in person.Open Source Students' Interest Group (OS SIG)Brandon LUM

For exhibitors

Please note the following points.

  1. The exhibition area is sheltered, but is open on both ends.  One side is hemmed in by a cafe.  As such, NLB side had advised that the wind condition can be very strong due to the tunnel effect.  Any standing banners will need to be sandbagged down.  Only under very strong wind conditions will rain ever get blown into that area.
  2. NLB has provided a network point that we can share via a wireless access point with every exhibitor.  You will be given the secret key that morning during the set up.  As it is shared, you are advised that the bandwidth will not be sufficient.  Be prepared to come with your own wireless broadband solutions or hook up to Wireless@SG.
  3. Power points on the floor are 32AMP industrial types.  FOSA will provide some converters to 13AMP regular ones, but you are advised to bring your own extension cords and multiplugs in case the distance to those common points are too big.
  4. FOSA is not responsible for any loss or damage of your equipment and any belongings.  Please consider bringing laptop locks and be prepared to station people at all times to look after things.  That said, FOSA appreciates your contribution and will do our best to keep an eye on everything.
  5. Timing wise, try to start preparing by 9am and be ready by 10am.  The NLB advised that most public visitors will peak at noon anyway, so we have some time to warm up among ourselves first.  And go hunt for resources if you forgot to bring any.  Bras Bash is just next door, so stationery will be convenient to purchase if lacking.
  6. Table size is as below.  Each exhibitor will get one table with a chair (or two whenever available).
